National Centre for Writing is very lucky to be guardians of Dragon Hall, a stunning medieval merchant’s building located in the heart of Norwich, which has been entrusted to us by Norwich City Council. In exchange making this building our home, so that we can celebrate and explore the artistic and social power of creative writing and literary translation, we are responsible for the cost of all the repairs and upkeep of a property which has stood for more than 600 years.
We are currently seeking support for two key aspects of Dragon Hall’s fabric; these are The Great Arch in the Gallery which overlooks the courtyard garden and the Ogee Arch Surround of the South Door on Old Barge Yard, the original entrance to Roberts Toppes’ medieval merchant’s hall. We have already raised £9,000 and have a further £11,513 to be able to carry out these vital pieces of conservation.
In Dragon Hall’s long history National Centre for Writing has only been its tenant for a short time - but we have a duty of care and an ambition to protect the building, ensuring its magnificent spaces are there for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.
