Norwich’s Chantry Place has welcomed a new pop up exploring the future of food that is good for health and the environment. The space is being used in preparation for a new art and science trail launching this summer in the city.
Throughout June, visitors to the Centre will see the window displays in the Edible East unit change as new art is created, and even get a glimpse of the artists hard at work.
The Edible East art/science trail, taking place between 13th July and 31st October 2021, explores a sustainable future for food with art and science. It aims to promote discussion about how we can produce food for everyone and help promote health in plants, people and the planet.
Edible East, working with local partners to bring the public the latest science from Norwich Research Park, and supported by Norfolk County Council, is creating some of the art at Chantry Place to engage with new audiences and visitors.
Lead Artist and sculptor Chris Jackson said: “One of the first things people will be able to see at Chantry Place is one of my own pieces being built, a giant growing sculpture based on the idea of a forest garden made from cardboard. I will continue to add further artworks to it over the coming weeks and visitors will later be able to contribute their own ideas and objects when it is displayed at The Forum in September as part of the Heritage Open Days Festival.
“We already have over 20 artists involved in the Edible East trail whose art is inspired by world-leading science about the future of food. We have held regular meetings with scientists from across Norwich Research Park, inspiring us to explore scientific issues through art – and create new responses in a very engaging, human way that connects with people and their everyday lives. The great thing about being at Chantry Place is that we are able to share our ideas with a new audience who might not often visit a traditional gallery or museum. People are genuinely curious to know how these artworks develop 'behind the scenes' and the effort involved in creating them, so it's wonderful that people can actually see such works of art evolve so publicly in the Centre.”
The Edible East unit is located on the Lower Ground floor of Chantry Place next to Oliver Bonas.
